Guatemala was one of the most astounding experiences I have ever had in my life. It prompted spiritual growth, along with expanding my cultural horizons. Things I can vividly remember are the beautiful country, the food, but more importantly the people. I think one of my favorite aspects of the trip was our tour guides. They were funny, knew the country well, and had connections everywhere. They would take us on certain pathways that would save us two hours of driving, and they kept us SAFE. They know everyone and have connections everywhere and were able teach us in depth about the flora and fauna. They even pre-checked all the places we ate. We never had to ask the question whether the water was safe because they took care of that. They made my trip devoid of fear, which allowed me to interact on a closer basis with the people and the surrounding areas. It was the kids at Ahicam won my heart. One would think that the kids at the orphanage were in desperate need of our help, but it wasn’t the case. It is true to a certain extent, we had to take care of the kids, weed and work the fields in the surrounding area, and paint parts of the orphanage. However, the kids played a larger role in teaching me on what it is like to be truly content in life. The experience helped me establish may relationship with God better and taught me to be more self-reflective. Then there’s the adventure, because a 12-hour drive to the orphanage leaves a lot of pit stops. Rivers, jungle, pyramids, beautiful night skies, bat caves, and yes, even eating bugs. That list doesn’t even cover the extent of wonders to be explored. Guatemala was an experience that I highly encourage for others to participate in, it makes an unprecedented change in your mentality to life.
